BAE Systems takes a measured approach to training

The giant British defence group BAE Systems’ Instrumentation and Calibration Services (ICS) has been approved to deliver The National Physical Laboratory (NPL) dimensional measurement training programme to its own staff.

BAE picked a select group of experienced employees to be trained in delivering the programme at its Barrow Calibration Centre (BCC), enabling training courses to take place on site at BAE at times that suit delegates, supervisors and the management team. Haydn Clulow, operations director at the site said there was recognition that dimensional measurement was key to efficient productivity. “Without a good grounding in measurement it would not be possible to produce the kind of consistency and accuracy needed to develop our high-tech submarine systems,” he explained. Traditionally, NPL’s dimensional measurement programme is delivered through one of its six approved training deliverers but exceptionally in BAE’s case is its own training deliverer, with no third parties involved. Two to three NPL training courses will take place each month at the BAE Systems Calibration Centre based at Barrow-in-Furness. The National Physical Laboratory operates on behalf of the Department for Innovation Universities and Skills (DIUS).
