New course aims to give H&S practitioners more boardroom clout

EEF, the manufacturers’ organisation, has launched a unique course aimed at helping health, safety and environment practitioners communicate more effectively at board level.

The launch of the two-day course coincides with an escalation of new sentencing guidelines for health & safety offences. Last year saw 19 companies hit with fines of over £1 million – with the largest hitting £5 million. This compares to just three in 2015 and none in 2014. As fines are now based on company turnover, EEF believes that we will soon see the first £100 million fine.

The course has been developed in conjunction with EEF’s team of management and professional development experts. It is aimed to provide practitioners with leadership and management skills, on top of offering high levels of health & safety competence. It will teach the ability to effectively create, influence and communicate health & safety strategy in a pragmatic and commercial way.

“As the impact of new sentencing guidelines begin to have a real impact, the price for failing to adhere to health, safety & environmental regulation is becoming an ever great business risk, not to mention ever more cost with senior individuals being held more to account,” said Steve Jackson, EEF’s health, safety & sustainability director.

“In today’s challenging business environment being an expert on health, safety & environment is not enough. If those professionals are going engage at board level and with the wider workforce then a much more rounded package of business skills and competencies is required.”
