Nikon adopts Dassault Systèmes’ v6 to drive new designs

Optical equipment manufacturer Nikon Corporation has adopted Dassault Systèmes' v6 PLM (product lifecycle management) software as its global standard for what the firm is calling collaborative design.

Ken Moro, who lead the Catia v6 project team at Nikon Imaging's industrial design department, says the organisation is expecting the platform to serve as the idea-generation support system for designers and as the driver to enhance quality through higher design precision. Nikon will utilize the Enovia v6 collaborative platform to streamline data sharing, strengthen security and promote more efficient data management, he says. "Since the implementation of Catia V5, 10 years ago, the efficiency of our design process has improved significantly," states Moro. "This has been possible mainly because our designers were able to create 3D data for digital mockups with greater ease. Taking advantage of the enhanced rendering capabilities of Catia v6, we intend to further refine our design quality and establish a more creative design process," he explains. Nikon, says Moro, is also looking to Enovia v6 to bring lean thinking to its design and development activities, by, for example, minimising the number of mockup models that need to be built. The belief is that the new platform will also speed up decision-making across Nikon Imaging's 27 affiliated subsidiaries.
