Global engine developer and consultancy, MAHLE Powertrain, has increased its support for the Institute of Mechanical Engineers’ (IMechE) Formula Student event.

For the first time, the company will be sponsoring three of the teams entering into the 2018 series, up from one in previous years. Those teams are Cardiff Racing, The University of Birmingham Racing and Team Bath Racing Electric. All three have strong credentials, with Cardiff the defending champions from 2017, and Birmingham last year’s runners-up. Bath is a team pioneering the use of electric powertrains and was the most successful electric team at least year’s event.

Formula Student is one of Europe’s most established educational engineering competitions. It sees teams from across the continent compete to produce a prototype single-seat racing car for autocross or sprint racing. This year’s event takes place at Silverstone between 11 and 15 July.

“We have been a long-time supporter of the Formula Student competition and are delighted to be able to offer our support to three of the most exciting teams taking part,” said Simon Reader, engineering director at MAHEL Powertrain. “Some of the concepts that come out of the event are really eye-catching and showcase what aspiring engineers can bring to the table. There is a big job to be done in terms of engaging young people with engineering, and competitions of this type really help to showcase what can be achieved when young people are given the resources and time to bring their ideas to life.”
