Professor Gillie will be taking the lead on all academic matters. The role was previously undertaken by NMiTE’s CEO, Professor Elena Rodriguez-Falcon.
Professor Gillie was formerly Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of Warwick. He is a Fellow of the Institution of Structural Engineers, a Chartered Engineer and a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
Professor Elena Rodriguez-Falcon, NMiTE’s CEO, said: “NMiTE aims to launch in September this year with our Pioneer Cohort of initial students who will experience what I believe to be, the world’s most radical engineering learning experience. Martin will be playing a lead role in ensuring all aspects of our distinctive academic offering are in place, such as the curriculum, learning spaces and the student experience.
“I am genuinely thrilled to have Martin join us, he is passionate about making a difference in engineering education and advocating the NMiTE approach. “We are very fortunate to have Martin as part of our team.”
Professor Martin Gillie said: “NMiTE is the most exciting and unique development in engineering education for decades and it is an amazing opportunity to take a prominent role in shaping its success.
“We see that successful engineering is as much about having the skills to assess the financial, human, environmental, ethical and commercial impact of innovations as about rigorous technical engineering aspects. The curriculum will allow engineers of the future to excel in all these areas, not just simply the technical application of engineering science.”
Professor Gillie added: “Our vision has, at its heart, student engineers learning by solving real-world problems in teams - what we academics term social learning. It also includes them experiencing a curriculum that has employers deeply integrated in all aspects and has a broad approach that reflects successful engineering is about applying a wide range of skills.
“NMiTE will firmly break the mould of engineering higher education, which is hugely timely given the complex engineering challenges of our time, whether it is the arrival of driverless transport, harnessing the internet-of-things, applying AI or preserving the world’s limited resources as the population approaches 8 billion globally.”
