An induction should introduce the employee to all the aspects of their employment. It should include an explanation of the employee's terms and conditions and all the company policies and rules and regulations. It should also include an explanation of all health and safety requirements.
Induction pack
All materials, documents required for the induction should be prepared as an induction pack. This should include an explanation of the company structure and where the employee fits in, setting out company's visions and values as well as history. The company's products, services and markets as well as future developments should also be explained.
Topics that should be covered in the pack include payment schedule and method of payment, bonuses and any other form of profit share, holiday entitlement and procedure for requesting holiday, sick leave and pay including any group medical or health insurance and policy of reporting when off sick, expenses policy, mobile phone and social media/computer use policy, work breaks, smoking policy, equality and family friendly policies, bullying and harassment policy, redundancy and short-term lay off policy, disciplinary and grievance policies, time sheets/clocking in cards, dress code and any other policy specific to the company.
Training and personal development
Any training schedules should also be covered in the induction. This should be linked to training needs and objectives, performance appraisal and what promotion avenues are available.
Tour of the premises
The employee must be made aware of all important areas such as fire exits and location of the first aid kit. They must also know where the cloakroom, toilets and lockers are, where applicable.
Check personal documentation
It is essential that all documentation is present and checked. As well as signed contracts, an employee's file must include a record of references, proof of the right to work in the UK, and copies of all certificates that are applicable. A record of the P45/P46 must also be logged.
