38% of IT professionals have only ‘average’ knowledge of computer virtualisation and grid computing technologies, but 48% of companies are already using it to their advantage. Those are key findings of a survey commissioned by virtualisation specialist C&C Technology Consulting’s among around 50 IT professionals – IT directors and network managers – in a range of companies. Says Richard Gigg, C&C sales and marketing director: “This demonstrates huge potential in the UK for companies to adopt the benefits of virtualisation, such as cost and legacy system integration. “Virtualisation technology is something that every IT manager should be considering. Virtualising the server environment reduces the physical server estate, hence reducing the need for power and cooling and the associated costs. “Virtualising applications allows a single system to run multiple incompatible operating systems and their applications, overcoming many challenges with legacy applications still core to the business. “Adoption of virtualisation means that long-standing barriers to flexibility and compatibility can now be broken down whilst dramatically improving hardware utilisation rates, which in turn reduces implementation costs.”
