American company Handleman has officially opened its automated Distribution Centre (DC) in Bolton. The DC is to supply Tesco stores throughout the UK with CDs, DVDs and games.

The opening of the 275,000 square foot DC, which is capable of operating 24 hours, seven days a week, has created over 200 jobs in the local area and generated significant investment. The DC houses approximately 19,000 picking locations and 11,000 pallet racking locations. A total of £17 million has been invested in this new venture, from which over £8 million has been invested in sophisticated automation equipment – designed and installed by Knapp, acting as general contractor and systems integrator – using the very latest technologies to create an operation which will manage around 80 million units of product in its first year. The Mayor of Bolton, Councillor Walter Hall, officially opened the facility. He said: “I am delighted to welcome international company Handleman to Bolton. This is great news for Bolton and the local economy and demonstrates the Council’s commitment to working with the private sector to attract major inward investment to the town.”
