While maintaining corporate network uptime remains the top concern for almost a quarter of IT professionals (24.8%), managing bandwidth utilisation is a close second, with 23.9% of the vote.
Those are key findings from a survey of some of network management software firm Ipswitch's 100,000 customers.
The revelation follows a warning from Ipswitch last July that global networks would hit 95% capacity during key games in the 2010 FIFA World Cup.
While cloud computing garnered a lot of headlines in 2010, only around one in eight Ipswitch customers identified the need to monitor cloud-based applications as a challenge for 2011.
The suggestion is that the proliferation of cloud solutions is not as widespread as some industry commentators claim.
As for other results, identifying the IT estate came in third at 15.4%; managing infrastructure changes notched up 14.6%, monitoring cloud-based applications and virtualisation projects 13.3%.
"As the use of video and other bandwidth-intensive applications increases, so does the danger that bandwidth utilisation will exceed maximum levels, warns Ennio Carboni, president of Ipswitch Inc.'s Network Management Division..
"This, in turn, amplifies the need to effectively monitor the corporate network. Our survey results show that both utilisation and network monitoring remain key concerns for network administrators in 2011," he adds.
