Alex Botha has been named the new chief executive of the British Safety Council and vowed to lead its work to reduce deaths, illness and injuries in the workplace
Botha, currently finance director at the British Safety Council, will take the helm from outgoing boss, Julie Nerney from July.
Botha said he was excited about taking the role during a period of upheaval for health and safety laws.
He said: "I am delighted to have been offered this wonderful opportunity to head up an organisation dedicated to worker wellbeing at a time of considerable change in health and safety regulation and enforcement with a major government review underway and significant budget cuts for local and national regulators."
Botha, who has worked in investment banking and as a consultant in the construction sector, had impressed the appointment panel with his "firm grasp of issues" and "ideas for future direction", the British Safety Council said.
Key targets will include forging stronger links with members and championing their concerns and expertise on safety best practice, Botha said.
Outgoing CEO Julie Nerney, who will continue in non-executive and advisory roles, praised her successor.
She said: "I'm delighted with the appointment of Alex Botha who I believe will add real value to the role and oversee successful delivery of our five year strategy, further extending our reach as a charity which is committed to raising standards and saving lives."
