British Polythene Industries (BPI), one of the world's largest producers of polythene film products announced today (12 January) that it is to close its factory at Brampton in Cumbria with the loss of 39 jobs.
Despite announcing "positive progress and a financial results for last year "at the top end of current market expectations" the Greenock, Scotland-based group said the Brampton facility, which manufactures polythene film for packaging applications, had been "marginal for several years but with a significant deterioration in 2009 due to lower volumes".
BPI said that production currently undertaken at Brampton would be transferred elsewhere within the company. Redundancy consultations had commenced with employees and every effort would be made to find alternative employment either within or outside BPI, it promised.
