Storage and server consolidation firm PolyServe, now operating in the UK, says its mission is to stop ‘server sprawl’ by offering a SQL-based file serving cluster alternative to slash points of management, increase server utilisation and reduce the cost of high availability.
Existing manufacturing users include General Electric, Dupont, Gore, Lockheed Martin and Greif, and some 500 organisations world-wide are deploying PolyServe’s products to build computing utilities for mission-critical database services and file services.
With its approach, all servers can simultaneously read and write to shared data on a storage network.
Chris Gomersall, who heads PolyServe’s European operation, says: “We believe that as large organisations embark on huge server consolidation projects, it becomes quickly apparent that virtualisation tools such as VMware are great for test and development, web servers or lightly used apps, but SQL server demands high performance and throughput, so cannot be consolidated using virtualisation.
“The overhead of running essentially two operating systems on Windows servers is just too much. PolyServe provides an environment for consolidation of SQL server, and high-availability comes as a natural by-product of consolidation.
“There are lots of companies out there providing hi-availability solutions for the Windows market, but this often requires investment in additional servers and storage – which is at odds with the consolidation initiative PolyServe provides the hi-availability capability and reduces server and storage footprint.”
