The pace of decline in UK car production is slowing, but commercial vehicle manufacture continues in sharp decline, latest vehicle production figures show.
Although June's production shortfall for cars was the smallest of the year, commercial vehicle output suffered a 60.4% fall in June.
The statistics showed UK car production for June some 30% down at 91,718 bringing the year to date figure to 410,740 – a 50% fall on the same period a year ago.
For vans and trucks, the output was 8,532 (-60.4%) in June and 43,174 (-64.5%) for the year so far.
Paul Everitt, chief executive at the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT), which compiles the figures, said: "The UK motor industry is weathering the global recession and beginning the long road to recovery. As production volumes and registrations begin to stabilise, government must help to sustain consumer confidence and encourage banks to deliver the credit industry needs."
On commercial vehicle production, he added: "UK commercial vehicle production remains extremely low. This reflects the difficult economic conditions and fragile business confidence in key markets, particularly the road haulage and construction sectors."
