Organisations whose business-critical applications are in Cobol can now query and manage their data files much as they would relational databases, following launch of a system by Acucorp.
The company, which develops Cobol modernisation and extension solutions, says its new data management system is about enabling current users to apply SQL and RDBMS concepts to their Cobol data files.
It also makes the point that the system gives them the flexibility to access data from ODBC-enabled applications, like Microsoft Excel and Crystal Reports, as well as JDBC-enabled Java applications.
AcuXDBC’s re-engineered drivers and SQL processor promote fast execution of SQL commands on large data sets. High performance also comes from its advanced rule-based optimiser that uses the describe key information to determine what keys to push for the WHERE and/or ORDER BY clause.
Beyond that, the AcuXDBC system catalogue organises Vision files, the indexed data files included in Acucorp’s Acucobol-GT development system, so that users can query and manipulate their data directly as they would in a RDBMS.
Finally, the system’s query tool gives businesses the power to use SQL scripts and commands to manage flow of company data. This tool also allows permissions and views, providing extra security and even more flexibility in how data access is controlled.
“Based on the feedback we’ve already received from customers, including those who participated in our beta programme, we anticipate that AcuXDBC will become the market-leading Cobol data management solution,” says Bob Cavanagh, director of product management.
