Dangers in cloud, small businesses warned

Smaller businesses thinking about moving into cloud computing are likely to find themselves with serious problems if they don't take into account the wider scope of their operations.

That's the warning from integrated SaaS (software as a service) solutions firm WORKetc founder, Daniel Barnett. "Small businesses aren't putting enough into consideration when taking on cloud SaaS solutions" he advises. Barnett says companies are routinely tempted first by popular SaaS solutions such as Salesforce, Basecamp, or Microsoft products. "Then they realise the power of these applications, and start picking up more software [and] before they know it, they're dealing with a list of applications that don't integrate properly," he warns. "They're over their heads in monthly subscription costs, and operations aren't any more efficient. This can be detrimental to the growth of any small business." Barnett is urging businesses to consider their CRM, project management software, and billing when taking up any cloud-based application. "We have customers who have stated they were previously managing their business through six different applications… The idea behind WORKetc is to take all features that these applications offer, and combine them into one robust, integrated solution."
