DBERR appoints Temple to push through improved business support

The Department for Business has appointed Martin Temple to chair the Board that will oversee the government's drive to simplify government-funded support for businesses.

Temple, current Chair of the manufacturers' organisation EEF, will take up the position of Chair of the Transition Management Board for the Business Support Simplification Programme (BSSP) this week (w/c 14 April). The BSSP will reduce the number of business support schemes offered by the government from 3000 to less than 100 by 2010. These changes, to be delivered through Business Link, mean government-funded programmes will have more impact with the same resources. Business Minister Shriti Vadera said: "This is an important appointment to ensure delivery of our commitment to simplify and ease the access of our support for growing businesses. I am confident Martin's long experience and perspective from businesses using business support will be invaluable." Martin Temple was last year appointed Chairman of EEF after an eight year stint as Director-General. He is also Chairman of 600 Group plc and Chairman of CEEMET, the European Employers Organisation for the manufacturing sector. He previously was Vice President of Avesta-Sheffield AB, a major producer of stainless steel.
