Designers turn to Autodesk Showcase for real picture

3D design engineering software specialist Autodesk is reporting that its Showcase solution is gathering momentum across Europe, with a rapidly growing number of designers, engineers, marketing and sales professionals using the software.

Nick Manning, media and entertainment industry development manager at Autodesk, says that users can transform digital prototypes into photorealistic imagery and immersive, interactive presentations. That, he says, enables them to evaluate designs in more detail and in context, as well as to explore alternatives in real time – and, should they want to, also communicate the story behind their designs. "Showcase users benefit from streamlined interoperability with range of Autodesk and third party CAD software, the ability to refresh upstream design changes with a single click and the opportunity to achieve photorealistic results within a single application," says Manning. "Together, this enables them not only to develop higher quality visualisations but also to reduce the time, expense and expertise required to achieve them," he adds. Manning explains that the ability to more accurately convey real-world materials, lighting and environments facilitates more informed decision-making by customers – enabling them to review design options more holistically. "All of this, combined in a fast real time presentation environment, will help tell the story behind a design reducing the need to develop costly physical prototypes in order to communicate design intent," he says. He gives the example of iconic Swiss watchmaker Ulysse Nardin, and explains that, to help refine its watch cases, the company recently began using Autodesk Showcase software. The software there creates accurate, photorealistic images of Ulysse Nardin's digital prototypes, allowing design teams to visually explore a wide array of decorations on movement parts, dials and watchbands – thus reducing the production of physical prototypes.
