John Hillier has been appointed chairman of the specialist awarding organisation EAL. He replaces Alastair Imrie who has retired.
Hillier was chief executive of the National Council for Vocational Qualifications from 1990 to 1997, and was responsible for the development and introduction of NVQs and GNVQs. He spent many years in the glass and steel industries working in production and HR management.
He is a trustee of the Commercial Education Trust, which promotes links between education and industry and has also worked as a consultant in learning and assessment to the UK government and in many overseas countries.
Hillier said: "We have to maintain that quality – and cope with the changing environment surrounding skills and qualifications.
"Government support for qualifications is changing radically. Our job is to ensure continuous development of the organisation so our customers continue to get the support they need to provide fair and reliable assessment."
