EEF, the manufacturers’ organisation, has welcomed the publication of the ‘Next Steps for Regulatory Reform’ by the secretary of state for enterprise and regulatory reform, believing it sends an important early signal that the new Ministerial team intends to maintain momentum in this important area.
Ian Peters, EEF director of external affairs said: “Whilst business will rightly remain sceptical until it sees firm results, there is now a real head of steam building across Whitehall to deliver on the Better Regulation agenda. It is however essential that all departments across government continue to focus on achieving the 25% reduction of administrative burdens. Business will be examining closely what progress they have made in the autumn.”
In particular, EEF welcomed:
- Health and Safety Commission proposals to examine how low risk businesses that operate best practice in health & safety can face lower administrative burdens
- Proposals to publish an Employment Simplification Bill
- A commitment to earlier publication of guidance on new legislation
- Proposals to publish a summary document for business of new legislation introduced on the two common commencement dates of 1 April and 1 October. EEF will be urging government to ensure that this guidance for business is comprehensive.
