Wigan-based electronics manufacturer C-TEC has switched on to productivity savings of £100,000 as part of its world-class business improvement drive.

The company, which manufactures fire alarm control panels, voice alarm systems, disabled refuge systems, nurse-call systems and audio-frequency induction loop systems, started working with the Manufacturing Advisory Service (MAS) North West at the Manufacturing Institute in 2005 on lean excellence projects. With its move into new production facilities complete and the lean site layout bedded in and achieving what it describes as "impressive productivity improvements", the company has now implemented continuous monitoring of machinery performance and preventative maintenance to minimise machine downtime and maximise throughput. Says Stephen Collier, C-TEC manufacturing director: "MAS has provided us with both practical and strategic support – helping us to pinpoint the major business improvement issues, plan actions to tackle these challenges and train key staff to carry the improvements forward. "In the spirit of true lean excellence, we are continually improving the way we operate and refining our processes and are confident that we can raise productivity by a further 5 to 10%. In today's harsh economic climate it is vital that we keep moving forward and working smarter to protect sales and jobs."
