Event looks to address skills shortage in the West Midlands

Leading manufacturers in the West Midlands should team up to unlock the region’s young talent and combat the skills shortage, says a leading business network.

On 28 September, Business in the Community (BITC) will be hosting a debate at the Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) in Coventry. The event will look at how companies can remove the barriers that are faced by young people looking to enter the job market for the first time.

Paul Rowlett, MD of the MTC, and Carmen Watson, chairperson of Pertemps, will be among the keynote speakers discussing topics including the impact of the controversial new Apprenticeship Levy. The event is part of BITC’s ‘Future Proof’ campaign, which looks to engage young people in work.

One in three young people find the process of applying for jobs difficult, with factors including a lack of previous experience and insufficient qualifications being cited as the main reasons behind this, explained Grace Mehanna, campaign director for talent & skills at BITC.

“Manufacturers need to recognise these issues and address them as it can be very bad for their reputation,” she continued. “What we want to do with this event is start to unpick some of the underlying trends behind this research and get an insight into what can be done to overcome them and ensure the pipeline of young talent get the opportunities they deserve and firms the skills they need to prosper.

“There are a few places left for the event, so if you are interested in doing your bit for meeting the skills gap and an expected 12.5 million national vacancies by 2022, now is the time to step forward.”
