Exmoor cuts traceability from three days to 90 seconds

Ear, nose and throat medical supply manufacturer Exmoor is reporting that product traceability for a potential recall has been cut from a three-day manual job to just 90 seconds, using its Jobshop MRP system.

The Somerset-based company's works manager Janet Hosier explains that materials control is vital for the company, and that Jobshop's production planning module is now handling that requirement. "A number of our products are implanted into the human body, so we have to be geared up for an instant recall in the event of a potential problem," says Hosier. "We need to know what products are in which batches, and what was sent to which customer. We also need to know their shelf life, and everything else about every product," she adds. Hosier states that it was this instant traceability function, along with the system's 'use-by-date' capability that originally steered Exmoor to Jobshop. "It didn't take long for Jobshop to become an invaluable and integral part of our company, providing us with a full database right across the board, for every piece of information we need to store and retrieve," she continues. "It gives us all the information we need at the touch of a button: it gives us complete control over our stock, and an up-to-date picture, minute-by-minute, of what our customers' requirements are." Hosier also rates Jobshop's MRP, which holds costs and lead times, as well as supplier data and certification requirements. "We've been able to reduce our stock holding by a third because of the control Jobshop gives. It's also extremely valuable in showing us when something is reaching its sell-by-date."
