Extreme Networks announced today [22 March] that it is working with virtual computing specialist Citrix Systems to integrate server virtualisation within the network.

The pair are using Extreme Networks XNV virtualisation lifecycle management solution, which supports Citrix XenServer and VMware. Gordon Mangione, vice president, data centre and cloud division at Citrix, explains that the XNV virtualisation and cloud architecture provide network-level virtualisation support, including management, reporting, configuration and mobility, enabling 'zero touch' management and mobility between the server and the network. In fact, XNV integrates the network management system with the virtualisation management platform so that users get full visibility and synchronisation between the server virtualisation environment and the network. "One of the major challenges in the next phase of virtualisation adoption lies in integration and support for networking functionality," comments Mangione. "Extreme Networks offers an open platform approach that enables XenServer customers to tightly integrate server virtualisation with the network, giving users a seamless mobile VM experience in the data centre," he adds. "Extreme Networks is addressing the advanced capabilities enabled by virtualisation through an open network, multi-hypervisor approach," states Kevin Ryan, director of data centre marketing at Extreme Networks. "Citrix is an ideal integration partner as one of the leaders in server virtualisation, and as a platform of choice of many of our customers in the managed hosting and cloud marketplace," he says.
