First 68 apprenticeship places now available at £3m Shropshire training hub

Nearly 70 apprenticeships are up for grabs later this month as a Shropshire training hub hosts a major summer event.

The event on 30 June will mark 60 days until the official opening of the £3 million Marches Centre of Manufacturing & Technology (MCMT), a state-of-the-art training centre in Bridgnorth that aims to support ‘2020 learners by 2020’.

The 65,000 square-foot MCMT is led by local employers Grainger & Worrall, Classic Motor Cars, Salop Design & Engineering and training specialists In-Comm, and is designed to ensure that apprentices passing through its doors are ‘industry-ready’ when they leave.

June’s event, aimed at young people, parents and businesses alike, will give attendees the chance to have a sneak-peek at the MCMT, along with a virtual tour of the technology zones and a chance to meet key members of the team. There will also be a chance to sign up for the first cohort of apprentices at the centre, with courses ranging from maintenance engineering, business improvement and welding, to mechanical engineering and engineering design.

“We are continually told that there is a skills shortage in the region and this is holding companies back,” said Matthew Snelson, managing director of the MCMT. “Now is the time to stop talking about it and actually embrace a bold and ambitious vision to bridge that gap.

“We are just finalising the technology that will be installed and ready for action when we launch in September. It’s an exciting list so far and will be far more advanced than anything currently available in the county.”

The centre will contain a specialist CNC Zone, five vehicle ramps, 30 manual lathes and milling centres and a Laser Roamer arm for metrology, amongst others.
