Forensic log management key to compliance initiatives

Forensic event log management is "very helpful" in maintaining and managing event log and syslog activity, in line with increasingly stringent compliance standards.
So say almost two thirds (65.4%) of network administrators, responding to IT management software developer Ipswitch's survey of 100,000 of its customers on the value of log management functionality in its WhatsUp Gold suite.
Ipswitch Network Management Division's president Ennio Carboni makes the point that having to retain and report on event log and syslog activity for regulatory compliance standards, such as Sarbanes Oxley, is becoming overwhelming for many companies.
"Log management has become paramount to all businesses, due to the increasing number of compliance standards being introduced across different industries [and] improper management can result in severe financial penalties," comments Carboni.
"Through appropriate management of event log and syslog files, organisations can be safe in the knowledge that they do not fall foul to regulatory compliance penalties," he states.
Ipswitch survey follows its launch last month of the latest version of WhatsUp Log Management v10, said to be easier to use, more intuitive and more comprehensive, with an out-of-the-box security and compliance solution for businesses.
