Corrugated packaging manufacturer DS Smith Packaging has purchased rugged fixed-mount PCs for its forklift truck fleet, after trials showed them to be 'unbeatable'.
The JLT 1215 series of computers – supplied by JLT partner Mobexx – perform a variety of real-time data communication and capture tasks for the packaging firm and will eventually become the standard touchscreen PC across group sites.
DS Smith Packaging currently uses the devices across three sites (Rawcliffe, Featherstone and North Fields in Louth). The company selected the PCs because of the 12-inch touchscreen in a compact, weatherproof and ultra-rugged chassis.
"We believe that there is nothing to beat the JLT computers for our purposes," said Glyn Tomlinson, DS Smith's regional IT manager. "Our decision to standardise on the product follows extensive use at three key sites where the computers have been tested in extreme conditions. The manufacturing environment in which we work is challenging and the forklift trucks are working both inside and outside at all times of year."
Solid state disk drives in the devices improve system reliability where forklift trucks are being driven over uneven surfaces. "They are a better option to standard hard disks," added Tomlinson.
