Jude Brimble, GMB National Secretary, took workers to meet Mr Gove at the cabinet office this afternoon to highlight the disaster a no deal Brexit would be for the UK’s vital manufacturing sector.
The meeting was led by Jack Dromey, Shadow work and Pensions Minister, with GMB and Unite members from manufacturing firms.
More than 500,000 manufacturing jobs have been lost in the past decade and no deal Brexit would crush what remains of the sector.
Jude Brimble, GMB National Secretary, said: “Michael Gove thinks ‘we hold all the cards’ post Brexit. So how come his Government is scrambling around at the last minute to safeguard the UK’s 2.5 million manufacturing jobs?
“Ministers need to stop playing politics with people's livelihoods - and put UK jobs before Boris Johnson's lust for power.
“We’ve already lost half a million jobs in the past decade - a no deal Brexit would be a car crash for UK manufacturing.
“We told Mr Gove in no uncertain terms that we must meet with the Prime Minster urgently to develop a coherent strategy to protect our vital manufacturing industries.”
