Hands-free working boosts productivity for Morrisons

Supermarket chain Morrisons has implemented wireless systems at five of its manufacturing sites in the UK.

The solution includes integration of forklift truck-mounted terminals with voice-directed picking, enabling hands-free working. As well as improving accuracy and health and safety, Morrisons hopes to boost forklift truck operator efficiency by 30%. Morrisons evaluated several truck-mounted terminals before selecting the IND FTF 2475, supplied by Zetes. During testing, the terminal scored best on several criteria, including size, functionality and build quality, and its ability to be customised and supported locally proved the deciding factors. The implementation phase for this project, which began earlier in the summer, involves integrating more than 130 of the forklift truck-mounted terminals with Zetes' voice-directed work system, called 3iV. Gary Barr, IT director at Morrisons, said: "Our operators preferred the IND terminals because they are robust, user-friendly and fully customisable. Integrated with the voice technology we have already implemented, Zetes has created a highly automated and efficient manufacturing operation that supports safer, hands-free working." James Hannay, senior VP northern region for Zetes, added: "After having successfully installed the voice solution in Morrisons' distribution centres, we are very pleased to be supporting their manufacturing optimisation. Zetes' wide range of solutions which cover the entire supply chain, mean customers like Morrisons can have access to the widest range of data capture technologies from a single point of contact."
