This week's announcement that health and safety consultants are now being invited to sign up to an independent register that is intended to become the new benchmark for standards in the profession has been welcomed by the British Safety Industry Federation (BSIF). Its CEO David Lummis said it was refreshing to see the impetus of Lord Young's safety recommendations continuing despite his early exit as a Government adviser.
The Occupational Safety and Health Consultants Register (OSHCR) is being set up with support from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to increase employers' confidence that they can access good quality, proportionate advice.
Lummis said of the launch: "The BSIF is pleased that the New Year has got off to such a great start with the online national register of occupational safety and health consultants now open for registration. Unfortunately, there are always those who think they know more than they do and this register provides the perfect way to highlight the good health and safety consultants and weed out the not so good. The register, once up and running, will allow the continuous flow of well balanced and sensible advice to be dispensed to businesses that need health and safety guidance. The OSHCR will be a much welcomed addition to the sector."
He continued: "It is refreshing to see that despite Lord Young's early exit as a Government adviser, his recommendations in the 'Common Sense, Common Safety' report continue to carry momentum. This is of course vital to ensure that the Health and Safety sector's reputation continues to improve year on year and those who are at risk are properly protected."
