IBM reveals five life-changers for next five years

Energy-saving solar technology will be built into asphalt, paint and windows; there’ll be a crystal ball for your health; you’ll talk to the web; personal digital shopping assistants will be common – and forgetting will become a distant memory.

Those are the next ‘five in five’ – the big innovations over the next five years – according to IBM. The health crystal ball, for example, will map health risks from your DNA and advise on what you can do to prevent them – all from an appliance costing less than $200, says IBM. Big Blue also believes that pharmaceutical companies will also be able to engineer more effective medications targeted for individual patients. As for the talking web, IBM is predicting voice-activated technology that changes how people create, build and interact with information and e-commerce websites. In the future, says IBM, through the use of VoiceSites, people without access to a personal computer and Internet, or who are unable to read or write, will be able to take advantage of the web. And forgetting? According to IBM, we can expect everyday life events to start being recorded, stored, classified and provided at the appropriate time and place by both portable and stationary smart appliances – using personal miniature microphones and video cameras.
