Industry concerned by shortage of European engineers

The UK arm of a giant international pneumatics specialist has put its weight behind solving the problem of the potential shortage of trained engineers identified by independent research from the European Federation of National Engineering Associations (Feani).

While Feani found that the situation varies from country to country, in Europe as a whole the number of students enrolling in science and engineering courses was not high enough to satisfy industry's current needs. Now, the pneumatics expert SMC has admitted that it is concerned about a reduction in the number of young people selecting engineering as a career. In light of its findings, Feani is considering a media-focused campaign to make European engineering more attractive to students using communication messages such as, "Engineers Make A World Of Difference" and "Engineers Help Shape The Future". Dave Westbury, engineering and technical services manager at SMC in the UK said: "We applaud the use of this communications campaign by Feani to help change the misconceptions that some students may have about engineering ... we also firmly believe that both innovation and engineering are inextricably linked."
