Industrial giant Ingersoll Rand says it is harnessing PTC's Windchill PLM (product lifecycle management) software to implement what it terms 'outcome-driven innovation'.
George Ashley, global director of virtual engineering at Ingersoll Rand, explains that it's all about asking customers what outcomes they want and then consistently delivering those end results the first time.
By eliminating the need for revisions, he says, Ingersoll Rand will be able to reduce costs and drive competitive products to market faster. And key to that is increasing early collaboration across multiple business units and time zones during product development cycles.
"Any company can go back and make adjustments to a product to help customers meet their goals," observes Ashley. "By eliminating that alteration and iteration step, and delivering the goal outcome from the start, we are further separating ourselves from the competition and positioning ourselves as innovation leaders."
And that's not all. Ingersoll Rand is also using Windchill to unite its growing business. With completion of the Trane acquisition, Ingersoll Rand doubled in size. In order to realise its PLM objectives and share data across its newly diverse product lines, the company is using Windchill to consolidate disparate systems and bring the now doubled departments and sources of product data together.
"After any acquisition, consolidation becomes a major challenge to overcome," comments Teddy Bekele, global it director for engineering, Ingersoll Rand. "For us though, the answer was simple – continue to standardise on Windchill."
