A Royal Charter has been granted to create the Chartered Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors (CIEHF) in recognition of the value of ergonomics and "the pre-eminent role of the Institute in representing the both the discipline and the profession in the UK".

Addressing a reception in London to mark the Institute's chartered status, Nicky Morgan, MP for Loughborough and Secretary of State for Education, said: "As the local MP for the Institute of Ergonomics and Human Factors, I have had the pleasure of watching your organisation grow and develop and I am delighted to be here to congratulate you on achieving your Charter status.

"The work of the Institute and its members is increasingly relevant to the challenges of today and I am very proud to see that work recognised on the national and international stage. This great honour has been achieved through the hard work of all those involved."

Steve Barraclough, CIEHF chief executive, added: "Ergonomics is all about us and most of us don't usually notice good design in products, systems or processes but we do notice poor design and the negative effect that can have on our daily lives.

"The Royal Charter has been granted to the Institute in recognition of our unique field of activity, the high professional qualification of our members and the contribution of their work in making life better. The future holds many challenges and means that ergonomists will have much to do whether that's designing for an aging population or improving the autonomy in systems. Ergonomics is everywhere."

Formed over 65 years ago, CIEHF was the first organisation is now the leading professional body whose members are experts in the study of how people interact with products, processes and environments.
