A pronounced shortage of skilled IT workers is likely to hold back industry, according to the majority of IT managers surveyed for Hewlett Packard’s sixth annual Pressure Point Index (PPI) study.
The survey also finds nearly half of our IT managers carrying too great a workload, while 39% worry about how they personally can make an impact on their company’s performance. Further, they believe their businesses are not capitalising on IT.
“The challenge then is for IT managers to recognise and react to opportunities that deliver real business advantage,” says Campbell Robertson, HP Services managed services director. “By working with trusted business partners like HP, managers can realise their strategic contribution in practical and measurable ways and deliver real business benefits that bring efficiency and cost-effectiveness.”
The PPI survey appears to reveal a more open-minded approach towards outsourcing. Indeed, over three quarters of IT managers see outsourcing as the route to getting over skills shortage, while also improving business service levels. Managers also appreciate that outsourcing certain tasks gives them more time to focus on the real business issues.
