Liberty Electric Cars, the Coventry, West Midlands-based clean technology specialist says it has taken on the 12-strong engineering team who formerly worked for the electric commercial vehicle manufacturer Modec, which went into administration in March.

Liberty said the move had created "one of the world's leading EV technology centers", reinforcing its engineering team which was now one of the most experienced teams in EV technology in the world. The 12 skilled experts have some 200 years of automotive engineering experience between them and, in particular, 70 years of experience in EV technology. The company's engineering activity has been consolidated into its new Innovation & Customer Support Centre based in Coventry. Liberty MD Ian Hobday said: "Liberty Electric Cars has created one of the most highly skilled EV engineering teams in the world. With this tremendous know how in EV technology, Liberty will create the most exciting and high performing electric drivetrains ever seen. We have already been contacted by OEMs to develop new generation EVs for a worldwide market that we expect to grow significantly over the coming years." Liberty Electric Cars – which will now move into the commercial vehicle sector – has already proven its advanced engineering capabilities by creating the world's first pure electric high performing 4×4 – the Liberty E-Range (pictured), which has the largest battery pack in an EV providing a range of 200 miles. Modec was founded by Lord Jamie Borwick in 2004 and was widely regarded as the market leader in electric commercial vehicles and one of the most promising low-carbon business opportunities for the West Midlands. It called in the administrators when takeover talks failed in March.
