A package of measures designed to help manufacturers realise what are believed to be £150 billion worth of opportunities arising from a low carbon economy have been announced by the manufacturers' organisation EEF.
The organisation says that moves towards a greener economy and a more sustainable way of life represent a major business opportunity for UK manufacturers, with the UK market for low-carbon products and services already worth more than £100 billion a year and expected to top £150 billion by the year 2015.
To help companies take advantage of the growing market for low carbon goods and services, as well as deal with legislative requirements, EEF has developed a programme of expert advice and guidance as the latest stage of its 'Manufacturing. Our Future' campaign. This includes:
• 'Low Carbon, High Growth' - guide to low carbon opportunities which includes an overview of the emerging market and sources of funding for companies keen to move into the market
• 'Are you Ready?' - a guide to the Carbon Reduction Commitment and how it will impact on companies' business
• A nationwide series of half day seminars in conjunction with British Gas Business entitled 'Manufacturing the Green Economy'. These will help companies find out the benefits of proactive environmental management
• Half day senior management workshops provided by EEF specialists on climate change tailored to help individual companies identify the challenges and opportunities presented by today's low carbon agenda.
EEF Head of climate and environment policy, Gareth Stace, said: "Increased regulation and growing consumer pressure is forcing companies to up the ante in their approach to the low carbon agenda. This is new ground for some and our expert advice and guidance is designed to smooth the process and take advantage of what will be a substantial market."
