Luton in the van for Vivaro production
Union chiefs yesterday welcomed the news that more than 1000 jobs had been secured and praised workers and the boss at Vauxhall's Luton plant following a decision by parent group General Motors than new generation Vivaro vans are to be built there. Vauxhall said the Luton plant would continue to be an important part of its manufacturing footprint.
Len McCluskey, Unite the union's general secretary, praised workers for their hard work and resulting savings and the efforts of Vauxhall's chairman Nick Reilly in putting an end to long running uncertainty over the future of the Bedfordshire plant when the current contract between Vauxhall and Renault runs out in 2013.
It had been feared that the production of around 62,000 vans a year might be undertaken in Germany.
