UK Manufacturing: The Facts 2022 shows that the UK remains the ninth largest manufacturing nation globally, with an annual output of £183bn, comprising over half (51%) of the country's total exports.
Far from the stereotypical image of manufacturing as poorly paid, dangerous and repetitive work, Make UK's figures show that the avergae salary in manufacturing is 12% higher than the wider economy, with over 2.5 million people working in factories up and down the country.
Manufacturing is also set to play a key role in the government's levelling up strategy, with every region of the UK maintaining a significant manufacturing base. In every region outside of London, manufacturing wages are significantly higher than the regional average.
Research and Development capability is boosted by manufacturing - 64% of all R&D expenditure comes via manufacturing, with the pharmaceutical sector in particular punching well above its weight, making up over a third (35%) of all manufacturing R&D in the UK.
