Research by Hitachi Data Systems reveals that only 13% of manufacturing industry considers environmental factors as important in IT investments, despite climate change awareness.
In addition, manufacturing as a sector is the least likely to plan its data storage needs ahead, with just 14% perceiving storage to be a vital part of their IT infrastructures.
Hitachi believes that the results show manufacturing is behind the times in its attitude to data storage and “could be creating problems for itself in the future with under-investment and a lack of strategic planning.”
Another interesting findings from the survey is that almost half UK manufacturing companies do not have a policy for security of company data stored on mobile devices – risking valuable information leaving the organisation on mobiles, laptops and PDAs.
Beyond these, manufacturing is also the least likely of all sectors to have a data deletion policy to aid efficient data management (41%); it is the most likely to use legacy disk or tape backup rather than newer technologies (49%); and only 1% of manufacturers have more than three quarters of their data archived.
