Manufacturing jobs fall to 2.75m

The number of jobs remaining in UK manufacturing has reached a new low watermark, plunging by 30,000 to 2.75 million in the three months to February compared with 2.78 million for the three months to January.

The year-on-year loss of manufacturing jobs was 139,000. Across the whole economy, the number of unemployed people, the unemployment rate and the claimant count all increased, while the number of job vacancies fell. The unemployment rate was 6.7% bringing the unemployment level to 2.1 million. The claimant count was 1.46 million and the number of job vacancies was 462,000, down 68,000 from the previous quarter.
