The high-speed sportscar manufacturer McLaren Automotive has launched its new £50 million manufacturing facility in Woking, Surrey to build the company's state-of-the-art, high-performance sports cars.
Prime Minister David Cameron opened the new 32,000-square metre production centre which is alongside the McLaren Technology Centre at its headquarters, which is also home to the group's Formula 1 team.
All of McLaren's high-performance models will be built at the new factory, creating up to 350 highly-skilled jobs.
McLaren chairman, Ron Dennis said: "We exist to go faster; to be state-of-the-art; to innovate; to perform with belief, flair and passion; to be the absolute best at what we do. And everything that McLaren is has been built on the founding principles of good design and solid, seamlessly efficient engineering and manufacturing.
"Industry is realising that Britain's grand manufacturing tradition is a solid platform upon which to build – and I want the McLaren Group to play its part in the crucial recalibration of UK plc".
The Prime Minister said that it was during difficult times " when actually you've got to try to make sure you are building a really worthwhile economy for the future". The new facility was, he continued, "a great reminder that actually in Britain we do still have world class engineering, world class manufacturing, world class production techniques."
