The video was premiered at the National Fork Truck Safety Conference on 29 June, and will be publicly aired for the first time at IMHX at Birmingham NEC in September. The video accompanies a two-hour, high-impact training module, titled ‘Safely Working with Lift Trucks.’ This module is unique in that it targets both forklift truck drivers and the staff working alongside them.
As Stuart Taylor, managing director of Mentor, explains, 57% of forklift truck accidents happen to pedestrian bystanders. “They’re most at risk, so it’s essential that they’re included as part of a holistic approach to training and site safety.
“With the number of fork lift related accidents on the rise, it’s abundantly clear that much more needs to be done to safeguard pedestrians. The FLTA recommends that the relevant training forms part of an induction – while we are aware that some companies achieve this, it’s clear that many more do not…
“They need to understand the risks long before their first interaction with a lift truck. Employers should make certain they understand and recognise the hazards associated with forklift operations, and know how to respond appropriately to potential danger.”
The video re-enactment, entitled ‘Could you live with that?’ has also been designed to engage viewers and encourage them to think about and challenge unsafe behaviour on the shopfloor. The video illustrates the long-term impact of a forklift truck accident, and the importance of safety.
In support of the FLTA’s ‘Safetember’ forklift awareness campaign (1-30 September), Mentor is giving away 1,000 free PIN codes, allowing users to watch the new video training module for themselves. Visit www.mentortraining.co.uk for more information.
