Hyundai-Kia Automotive Group (HKAG) says it is partnering with Microsoft to develop the next generation of in-car infotainment systems.

Martin Thall, general manager of Microsoft’s Automotive Business Unit, claims that the initiative, which will be based on the Microsoft Auto platform, will deliver significant innovations. “These new systems will redefine consumer experiences in the car. Since the spring of 2006, HKAG and Microsoft have been sharing their vision for the future of in-car technology. We’re now aligned to develop the next generation of in-car infotainment,” says Thall. The first product, an infotainment system that provides voice-controlled connectivity between mobile devices, is due for launch in the North American market in 2010. HKAG says its Asian and European markets will follow, as the technology expands into multimedia and navigation devices. Hyun Soon Lee, president and CTO of HKAG, says it’s a new era for automotive IT, making the point that, following installation, new functions can be added or upgraded, with software updates. “The advanced capabilities, flexibility and low price point make the Microsoft Auto software platform an attractive solution for us,” he adds. In a related announcement, Microsoft and Hyundai-Kia, along with the Institute for Information Technology Advancement (IITA), have also signed a memorandum of understanding to co-establish an automotive IT innovation centre, with the objective of promoting innovation and opportunities for Korean software and device vendors. Microsoft Auto-powered systems are currently available in Fiat Auto Group vehicles in Europe and South America and Ford Motor Co. vehicles in North America.
