Million-pound windfall for Walsall foundry

A foundry in Willenhall, near Walsall, has secured over £1 million in orders in the past six months, thanks to its ability to offer a single source solution within the foundry sector.

Midland Pressure Diecasting (MPD) employs 65 people across two sites, and has seen orders come in from a number of industries, including the automotive, leisure and telecoms sectors. The orders are extremely diverse: MPD will soon be casting complex components for a new stand for a VOIP telephone, as well as parts for a collapsible table. Customers have wanted to take advantage of the shorter lead times, greater quality and reduced costs that, in many cases, MPD can offer.

Ash Suman, who founded MPD 15 years ago, says that the company’s success was down to its decision to control as many of its processes as possible under one roof.

“This has created an outstanding facility capable of high pressure aluminium and zinc casting, toolmaking and precision manufacturing,” explained Suman. “Customers increasingly want to rationalise their supply chains to increase speed to market and avoid any potential risks and we have certainly taken advantage of that.”

MPD has also recently taken on four employees from another local foundry, which went bust in April this year. Furthermore, the company has started training for the future with the recruitment of two apprentices – something Suman says is extremely important.

“It is difficult to find the specialised skills that are required within our trade and therefore we value experienced staff who can not only contribute to our business, but also pass on their skills to the next generation,” he explained. “Our growth plans depend on us having a flexible and skilled workforce and investment in both young people and more experienced employees continues to be one of our core philosophies.”

The company is also investing in its premises, with the recent acquisition of a further two acres of development land at the back of its premises in Willenhall. This is on top of the existing 80,000 square feet of space, and is designed to put the company in line with its future growth plans.

“Having the on-site tool room and toolmaking expertise means we are just as competitive as low-cost countries and, with us, there are never any logistics or quality challenges to face,” said Diptesh Patel, technical manager at MPD.
