Mora of Sweden is getting a handle on more ergonomic, higher performing knives for professional kitchens, carpentry and the great outdoors by using SolidWorks 3D CAD and Cosmos design analysis software.
The company says it chose SolidWorks Office Premium to speed up new product development, reduce costs, and improve its knives’ feel in users’ hands. It’s also using the sytem to convert old 2D designs into 3D to make it easier to improve existing products.
”We design handles that work best for those who use them for long periods,” says Olov Larsson, Mora’s design manager. “SolidWorks gives us much better surface and freeform modelling capabilities, so we’re able to refine our grips based on knife function and user feedback. That’s a tremendous advantage.”
As for CosmosWorks, he says that’s used to ensure each knife will stand up to everyday use – and he adds that incorporating design and analysis in product development has helped Mora to reduce prototyping costs because designs are accurate.
Beyond that, Larsson says that SWIFT (SolidWorks Intelligent Feature Technology) also helps designers who don’t work with CAD every day, helping speed up design time by automating routine processes and flattening the learning curve.
