MP Mary Glindon has swapped the backbenches for the workbenches of a local engineering firm - Fabricom Offshore Services - as part of National Apprenticeships Week.
Glindon, Labour MP for North Tyneside, shadowed Darius Bahrami (pictured), one of the six apprentices recruited to the international oil and gas group last year.
Bahrami, aged 18 from Sunderland, briefed Glindon in Fabricom's engineering project office and shared his experience as an apprentice.
Glindon praised the teenager and his colleagues. She said: "It's been gratifying to see how the apprenticeship scheme is now working and how professional, well poised, supported and most of all confident the apprentices are."
Glindon added: "The apprenticeship scheme Fabricom Offshore Services provide is an excellent example of why young people should consider apprenticeships, particularly in engineering as it promises such a lucrative and successful career."
Bahrami is enrolled in a four-year Modern Apprenticeship Scheme with Fabricom Offshore Services. The scheme offers classroom-based training at Tyne Metropolitan College, three years' on-site experience at Fabricom's engineering head office, practical training in various engineering disciplines, as well as NVQ Level 3, HNC qualifications and sought-after industry experience.
Fabricom has also launched a dedicated Offshore Services Academy to help service demand for skilled workers.
The academy, has over 30 people undergoing apprenticeships, graduate training programmes and professional development schemes.
National Apprenticeships Wekk takes place from 11 to 15 March.
