MTC provides free COVID-19 training

The virtual resources will support the development of organisations’ workforces during the pandemic as employees in the region adjust to new ways of working.

The temporary extra support is designed to help Liverpool businesses address some of the challenges that industry is facing, both now and in the future. The suite of online courses enables learners to acquire new knowledge and skills in their own time, at their own pace, and from any location with an internet connection.

The courses cover subjects from technical processes, including digital manufacturing and automation and robotics, to essential legislation, as well as new skills that are especially relevant in the current challenging circumstances, such as cyber security and stress awareness.

Dr Charlie Whitford, associate director for strategic development at the MTC, said “Our purpose at the MTC is to have a positive impact on society. We are committed to continuing to support businesses and workforces at this especially challenging time. By currently sharing our expertise remotely, we are helping people to take advantage of any unexpected time away from their workplace to develop their understanding of new technologies, and to gain knowledge and skills that will help them to adapt and transition to the new normal.”

David Hughes MBE, managing director of the MTC's Advanced Manufacturing Training Centre said the extra support is one of a number of initiatives that MTC Training has launched to support UK businesses and learners during the health crisis.

“Our programmes aim to future-proof the UK manufacturing workforce, by giving them the skills and knowledge to support their businesses adapt and adopt cutting edge technology today. By sharing some of our resources for free during the ongoing COVID-19 restrictions, we are ensuring that learners can continue to access these vital skills wherever they are,” he said.

The support programme is part of the MTC’s latest initiative, the Digital Manufacturing Accelerator, which was launched last year in partnership with the Liverpool City Region Combined Authority. Over a 10 year period the £15m funded project will bring together world leading manufacturing research, technology and experts in Liverpool’s Knowledge Quarter. The programme aims to transform the industrial landscape by combining the best innovations across physical and digital manufacturing technologies.
