New guide aims to protect SMEs from cyber attack

As almost three-quarters of small businesses have reported a security breach in the past year, a new guide to implementing a cyber security plan has been released.

The International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (IIRSM) has teamed up with Zurich to launch a guide for SMEs looking at the best ways to protect their data.

From May 2018, the new EU Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) will require all businesses to demonstrate greater accountability and planning for their cyber security processes. This will result in larger fines for companies breaching the regulations.

Hackers often target SMEs as they are able to get the highest reward for minimum effort. The government’s Cyber Streetwise campaign recently found that 22% of people ‘didn’t know where to start’ when asked how they put in place an effective data security programme. As a data breach can cost an SME as much as £310,000, it is essential that SME business owners get the best information on how and why to implement GDPR-compliant security measures.

The IIRSM’s Practical Guide provides companies with the support they need to be able to protect themselves against cyber attack. It comprises a detailed handbook that outlines the key steps to establishing a protection plan, including how to assess the risk your company could face; the types of data you hold and the practical measures to establish an effective protection.
