PTC acquires NC Graphics for integrated CAM software

PTC is buying Cambridge-based NC Graphics for its CAM software, particularly for optimising tool making and machining processes for moulds, dies, and prototypes.

It promises additional CAM capability beyond that already in Pro/Engineer and that from its earlier Polyplan acquisition. NC Graphics has more than 1,500 users in the aerospace, automotive, medical equipment and motor sports sectors, and PTC expects to capitalise on its expertise – offering its customers the opportunity to get parts made more quickly and at a higher quality level than non-integrated solutions. PTC says it will be able to offer an open solution to any toolmaker or company requiring high-speed precision machining CAM software, regardless of the source CAD data. These companies will be able to optimise their mould and die making processes to deliver more complex products faster and with less cost. “The global economy is intensely competitive, and the design and manufacturing of mould and die tools is typically on the critical path of a new product introduction cycle,” says James Heppelmann, executive vice president software products and chief product officer at PTC. “This acquisition allows customers to work more effectively with their outsourced toolmaker partners by connecting customer CAD data with the toolmaker’s CAM system,” he adds.
