Renold Hi-Tec Couplings has been awarded the ISO 14001 - Environmental Management System (EMS) – standard. Renold was prompted to work for the accreditation by a recognition of the need to become more environmentally conscious and of the desire of an increasing number of suppliers who want to deal with companies who can prove their commitment to the environment.

Part of a family of 16 international ISO 14000 standards, designed to assist companies in reducing their impact on the environment, ISO 14001 is the international standard for Environmental Management Systems and is the most widely used EMS in the world. First published in 1996, it applies to those environmental aspects over which an organisation has control and where it can be expected to have an influence. ISO 14001 centres around the process of how a product is produced, rather than on the product itself and aims to help organisations minimise how their operations negatively affect the environment and comply with legislation whilst, at the same time, continually improving. It took the of Halifax-based company 12 months to achieve the accreditation, with one person assigned to ensuring the standard was achieved. The process started with a review of all business activities which affect the environment and all relevant legislation and culminated in the development of written procedures and objectives for continual improvement. Renold Hi-Tec's Alan Dean commented: "A great deal of hard work and commitment across the whole business was required whilst working towards ISO 14001 and creating our environmental management system. However it was very important to us as ISO 14001 has become a requirement of many of our key customers. To ensure future business therefore it was essential we achieved the standard. Hopefully it will also help us to win new business if we can prove our on-going commitment to the environment."
